This year was the seventh Science in Public conference and took place at the University of Nottingham, which is also the base for the Leverhulme Trust-funded Making Science Public project. There were over 120 participants from Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Portugal, the United States and the UK and more than 25 panel sessions on topics from responsible innovation to storytelling and public engagement to the dilemmas of making expertise public.

Participation Now website

Participation Now is a new and experimental public engagement with research pilot, recently launched on The Open University's OpenLearn platform. This pilot emerges out of work undertaken by Nick Mahony and Hilde Stephansen under the auspices of the Catalyst and Creating Publics projects and as a result of an ongoing collaboration with the OpenLearn team.

Role

Ann is a part-time Research Associate on the Catalyst project. She will be investigating all aspects of researchers' practice in digital engagement and how public engagement with research can be supported and facilitated through digital technologies. Ann is based in the Institute of Educational Technology, working with Dr Anne Adams, Dr Trevor Collins, Dr Richard Holliman and Prof Eileen Scanlon.

Dr Anne Adams

Role

Anne is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology. As a co-investigator in the Catalyst project she utilises her breadth of experience in public and industrial technology research to support digital engagement in the project. In particular this includes supporting the Catalyst digital engagement researcher, Ann Grand.

Dr Hilde Stephansen
Dr Hilde Stephansen

Role

Hilde's role is linked to two projects: to Catalyst and to Creating Publics. Through her contributions to these projects she aims to explore new ways of conceptualising and enacting public engagement with social science research.

Working in particular with Nick Mahony and Richard Holliman, Hilde will contribute to the delivery and development of a set of Creating Publics research 'pilots'. This involves translating the research aims of the project into a specification and design for a set of new digital platforms for public engagement with research. She will then help translate insights drawn from these research pilots into the context of the Catalyst project and to others beyond.

Dr Nick Mahony
Dr Nick Mahony

Role

Nick is one of five co-investigators working on the Catalyst project. His main roles on the project are to:

  • help plan and co-ordinate the work of one of the two Catalyst Research Associates;
  • mentor relevant public engagement projects;
  • contribute to career development and training programmes; and,
  • translate findings and relevant insights from the Creating Publics project into the context of the Catalyst.

Dr Richard Holliman
Dr Richard Holliman

Role

Richard is the University's Champion for Public Engagement with Research. He is both the academic lead and a co-investigator on the Catalyst project. He has overall operational responsibility for co-ordinating and leading all aspects of this action research project, and helping to shape strategic objectives for OU public engagement with research.

As the university's champion, Richard is based on secondment in the Research Scholarship and Quality Unit. Alongside his role in co-ordinating and leading the research phases of the project, he is also responsible for connecting the work of the Catalyst project with the university's decision-making forums and senior managers, including the Faculty Deans and Associate Deans for Research, and Research Centre Directors.

Dr Richard Holti

Role

Richard is a Co-investigator on the Catalyst team, responsible for guiding the project's approach to working with organisational and cultural change, and the use of action research approaches for achieving change. He is based within the Department for People and Organisations within the Faculty of Business and Law.

Dr Trevor Collins
Dr Trevor Collins

Role

Trevor is co-ordinating the learning work package within the project, and is also involved in the communication and digital engagement packages.

The learning work package is concerned with identifying the existing development opportunities for research staff and students across the university with regard to public engagement, as well as identifying gaps where additional support could be provided by the university or external sources (e.g. the UK research councils, Vitae, JISC or the NCCPE).
